Cyber Centre at Launch of Report on Cybersecurity in the Americas

On 14 March 2016 the Global Cybersecurity Capacity Centre (GCSCC) participated in the launch of a key new cybersecurity report covering the Latin America and Caribbean region.

The 2016 Cybersecurity Report, 'Are we ready in Latin America and the Caribbean?' shows the region is highly vulnerable to potentially devastating cyber-attacks. It says that four out of every five countries in the region do not have a cybersecurity strategy or plans for protecting critical infrastructure. Two out of three countries do not have a command and control center for cybersecurity. And a large majority of prosecutors lack the capacity to punish cybercrimes.

The study was produced by the Organization of American States (OAS) in cooperation with the Inter-American Development Bank with the support of the GCSCC who carried out a cybersecurity capacity review of Jamaica and Columbia in 2015 using their innovative and holistic new maturity model, before this approach was rolled out across the region.

The report was launched officially at the Center for Strategic International Studies in Washington DC by the President of the IDB, Luis Alberto Moreno, and the Secretary-General of the OAS, Luis Almagro. Professor Michael Goldsmith of the University of Oxford represented the GCSCC and joined them on a special discussion panel to mark the launch.
